London x Sani
This segment is focused on Sani, an artist based in Peckham London, a culturally dynamic area of London known for its vibrant Nigerian and Caribbean diaspora. Peckham’s rich cultural serves as a pivotal backdrop for Sani’s artistic exploration, deeply influenced by the diverse identities and narratives within this diverse community.
Living amidst first and second-generation immigrants in Peckham has profoundly shaped Sani's artistic expression. The neighborhood’s multicultural environment fosters a sense of solidarity among its residents, reflecting a shared experience of navigating cultural intersections within London. His artworks not only capture his personal narratives but also resonate with broader socio-cultural dialogues, bridging local experiences with global perspectives. Through his art, Sani navigates themes of belonging, and community, offering nuanced reflections on the complexities of diasporic life in contemporary London. Thus, Sani’s journey exemplifies the profound interplay between art, geography, and culture, illustrating how artistic expression can illuminate and celebrate places like Peckham.
Below, presents a short selection of Sani’s interview.
1) How would you describe your artistic style?
"I would describe myself as a contemporary visual artist who uses a variety of materials to create art with three major tasks in mind: 1st to teach about myself and my heritage, 2nd to teach the audience about themselves, and finally, to push creativity".
2) What stories, viewpoints experiences do you like to express in your art?
"I generally create social commentary in regard to my art and generally tell human-centered stories relatable to people from any region of the world, but the importance of telling stories from Peckham is because its my personal story. I feel just as much British as I feel Nigerian, and so I try to reflect this unique experience of hybridity in my art."
3) Tell me about your pieces. How do they relate to the geography of Nigeria and your family background? What is the importance of capturing Nigeria while living in London?
"The first piece shows turban guys on a horse riding through London. The painting is a metaphor for myself experiencing London culture through my eyes."
"For me, the visual representation of my community gives me the opportunity to teach about my culture and diversity of people in London and, in many ways, breaks the border between Nigerians in London and Nigerians abroad. Even though my artwork ultimately speaks on the human experience, using Nigerian characters and imagery allows people to learn and connect to new cultures. That’s why it’s important to me."
